There is a difference
Different areas heal differently, here are the general healing times for piercings based on their placement on your body.
HEALING PERIOD
Ear Lobe – 6 weeks
Ear Cartilage – 3 to 6 Months but can take much longer.
ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS AND DRY THEM USING A CLEAN PAPER TOWEL BEFORE CLEANING YOUR HEALING PIERCING.
Clean the piercing site two to three times daily using sterile saline solution for 3 full months. Do not over-clean the piercing area! Colloidal Silver Spray is perfectly fine to use on your piercing and you can purchase it at Dis-Chem (Spray onto piercing).
If you would like to make your own saline solution, ensure that you use only iodine-free sea salt. Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of iodine-free sea salt into one cup (250 ml) of freshly boiled water. LET THE SOLUTION COOL DOWN UNTIL IT IS STILL WARM BUT COMFORTABLE TO THE TOUCH. With this method, you will need to make a new batch of saline solution each time you clean your piercing. A stronger mixture is not recommended as a saline solution that is too strong can irritate the piercing.
Once your hands are washed and clean, you can use a clean cotton round to apply the saline solution to the piercing site and allow it to soak for 5 minutes. You can then use a clean earbud to remove any secretion or "crusties" which will now be soft and easily removed due to the warm saline solution. You can then use a clean paper towel to tap-dry the area.
Avoid getting any shampoo, conditioner or chemical residue on the piercing site and ensure to rinse the piercing thoroughly with clean water after showering or bathing. Avoid the use of earphones and headsets during your healing period as these tend to harbour a lot of bacteria and pose the risk of infection. Ensure that anything that has contact with your ears is always clean (hats, beanies, sunglasses etc.).
NB: Avoid sleeping on your piercing at all during the healing period as this will prolong healing and may result in migration of the piercing.
NB: Avoid snagging or hooking your piercing on clothing, brushes and combs as well as getting your hair caught or wrapped up in the piercing if you have long hair. Avoid swimming completely for at least the first 3 weeks following the piercing procedure.
